As I think all of you
are aware, the Newcastle Fire Protection District is facing very
serious challenges. The fire station is structurally deficient
and firefighters are no longer allowed to stay in the fire station
while on duty overnight. They are required to sleep in a
travel trailer parked on an adjacent property. The Newcastle
Fire District pays our firefighters $8.50 per hour and offers no
health benefits to any of its employees. Revenues are not
adequate to build a new fire station or offer a living wage to
firefighters.
As a result of these
circumstances, the NFPD Board has decided to ask Newcastle residents
to approve a parcel tax in order to address the critical problems
facing the fire department. I want to invite all of you to a
meeting to hear about the problems facing the NFPD and how we can
help to solve these problems.
On Tuesday, Jan 10 at
7:00 pm in the NESD gym,
there will be a meeting to which you are all invited. Members
of the NFPD Board, consultants who have helped create the
parcel tax measure, members of the Friends of the NFPD Committee and
myself will be present to discuss the challenges facing the NFPD and
the importance of this parcel tax vote.
Please plan to
attend. There is no need to RSVP. Just join us at the
meeting and we will be pleased to see you.
We hope to see all of
you on Tuesday.
