Newcastle Elementary School receives 2008
Distinguished School Award. Being recognized for doing
good work is always a nice thing, but for the teachers, parents,
students Board Members and Superintendent Kathleen Daugherty, receiving
the California Distinguished School Award was a thrill. Does it make it
less exciting, knowing this is the seventh year Newcastle School has
received this recognition? Nope. Our kids might not grasp
the difference between our school and others, but we know that
the quality of education they receive here in Newcastle prepares them
for any future they seek.
This year, the selection criteria for the Distinguished School
program were more stringent than ever. Schools wrote a substantive
narrative application and then were subject to an extensive site
validation.
The California School Recognition Program is now in its 23rd year and
identifies and honors the state's most exemplary and inspiring public
schools with the California Distinguished School Award. Although
participation is voluntary, the award is highly sought after by schools
in all areas of the state. Elementary and secondary schools are
recognized during alternate years. For more information, check out
the California School Recognition web site: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/sr/cs/index.asp

Celebration Day
Hot but Happy!!
May 18, 2008 was Newcastle's annual Celebration Day. A very warm
day for May, but a good turn-out. Many thanks for the contributors
of the event (who picked the music? Very fun) and to those who
came, ate, played and supported!! Each year, one
citizen of Newcastle is recognized for their devotion to our community
through volunteer activities - this year Michael Leydon was honored (see
photo below with Supervisor Jim Holmes) for his MANY works including
(but not limited to) past president of the Newcastle Community
Association, Board Member for Newcastle School, Newcastle's "work
in progress" A Living History and many other organizations he
participates with directly or as liason. Thank you, Michael
Leydon!!
and THANK YOU to
the Lion's Club for offering "lunch for a buck" - you guys
were GREAT!!
The boy scouts
contributed multi-flavored smoothies with their blender on a weed-wacker
JoAnn Neft
donated ice cream which was served by Sierra Baptist Church, NABA
sponsored the raffle and donated the bicycle - other businesses provided
many more raffle prizes. Kathi Daughtery from Newcastle School was
made an "honorary resident" because she does so much us, but
lives up the hill aways...
Our local guide
dogs were on display, as well as a presence from local law enforcement,
Newcastle Baseball, Soccer and 4-H.
The Newcastle Singers from United Methodist Church sang some traditional hymms and a
great custom hymm about their "little white church on the
hill", Sugar Plump
Fairies and Pirates cavorted and made people behave silly.
Everyone was just so nice and made me proud to be connected with the
town of Newcastle.

Kids played in the bubble pool, visited the petting zoo, knocked down
bowling pins and climbed the rock wall...

Thanks, also to President Diane Ross and members of
the Newcastle Community Association for organizing the event, and to the
Newcastle Fire Department who helped out alot and shot this photo from
above the Music Exchange. Good job, guys!!
